Thyroid Remedies

A number of modern factors have resulted in an unprecedented rate of under-functioning thryoid conditions in North America today. Foremost among the reasons are:

1) Consumption of soybean oil and soy products (soy has proven thyroid suppressing properties). This is why soybeans are used so extensively in feeding livestock, as they cause reduced metabolism and more rapid weight gain. On the contrary, the lauric acid in coconut oil stimulates thyroid function. In the 1940's, farmers tried giving their livestock coconut meal as a cheap food, and found that their animals became lean rather than fatter.

2) The fluoridation of water supply, toothpastes and dental treatments (fluoride displaces iodine in the body).

3) The devitalization and depletion of soils due to modern chemical farming practices resulting in greatly reduced trace mineral content of our food. This has a marked negative effect on thyroid function.

Besides causing a sluggish metabolism and weight gain, an underactive thyroid leads to fatigue, dull, dry hair, poor complexion, and depressed immune function.

The following four remedies address the need for adequate iodine supply and thyroid stimulation.

Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil by Evergreen Botanicals

Extra virgin coconut oil has been shown to support and stimulate thyroid function (as opposed to soybean oil which suppresses thyroid function). Finally, after years of cover-up by the commercial food industry, the evidence is coming to the forefront how polyunsaturated oils actually contribute to high cholesterol, arterial build-up, free-radical damage, and many other health problems. Soybean oil in particular slows down metabolism and leads to weight gain. All polyunsaturates oxidize (go rancid) quickly and cause free radical damage that accelerates aging.

On the contrary, extra virgin coconut oil is very stable (it will not go rancid even when kept at room temperature for a year). The lauric acid it contains has been shown to have numerous health benefits, most important of which is its thyroid stimulating properties. Please see below the books from Amazon.ca which detail the positive results people have achieved by incorporating coconut oil into their diets.

Extra virgin coconut oil has been shown to be more effective than regular, non-virgin coconut oil. Extra virgin coconut oil can be produced by 3 different methods.

The best way is the "wet-milled" method. In this method, the meat of fresh, green coconuts is removed and within 2 hours is pureed into a slurry, then put into a centrifuge by which the oil is spun out (a bit like a cream separator). There is no heat at any stage. The oil has a tremendously fresh coconut smell and taste. All enzymes are preserved.

Our extra virgin coconut oil is produced using the "wet-milled" method.

The majority of virgin coconut oils are produced by heat drying the fresh meat of green coconuts, then cold pressing the dried meat. The drying temperatures vary from 40-80 degrees celsius depending on the manufacturer. Heat drying the coconut before pressing gives an inferior oil with less enzymes.

The third method, which is the way coconut oil was made for centuries, is by fermentation. Care must be taken that the end product does not taste fermented and that the moisture content is low enough to ensure long shelf life.

Extra virgin coconut oil is a highly recommended part of a thyroid stimulating program.

Another important benefit of extra virgin coconut oil is its ability to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and raise good cholesterol (HDL). So rather than contributing to heart disease and arterial build up, virgin coconut oil aids coronary health.

Coconut oil also has wonderful external uses as an anti-oxidant skin moisturizer that quickly absorbs into the skin. It helps protect from sun exposure and has been proven effective for a host of skin problems including eczema, psoriasis, acne, dry skin, aging skin, cradle cap and other yeast/fungal infections. It is also an excellent hair and scalp conditioner.

Books on Thyroid Health

Here are
a few books from Amazon.ca that are informative references on thyroid health.

Please click here to be taken to our Full Book Website where you will find many books on a wide range of natural medicine topics.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hypothyroidism: A Simple Plan for Extraordinary Results: A groundbreaking, proven approach for successfully diagnosing and treating the millions with hypothyroidism. Depression, weight gain, fatigue, headaches, memory lapses, hair loss-these are just some of the vague, often debilitating symptoms that plaguethe more than 13 million patients with hypothyroidism. The typical blood test for diagnosis is often inaccurate, leaving many to suffer through ineffective treatment. But now, there is a solution: Dr. Blanchard's groundbreaking program draws on emerging research, medical facts, and three decades of clinical experiences as an endocrinologist. Also includes specific nutritional advice and alternative treatments. Living Well with Hypothyroidism Rev Ed : What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You... that You Need to Know: Shomon knows of what she speaks: she's a health writer and thyroid patient herself. She also manages a thyroid Web site and writes a newsletter on hypothyroidism. In Living Well, she offers an extensively researched guide to this complex condition. She covers conventional, alternative, and late-breaking approaches to treatment. The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss: The first book to tackle the weight factors specific to thyroid conditions and detail a practical plan for lasting weight loss. Covering the issues including getting that all-important diagnosis, raising metabolism, resolving nutritional deficiencies, treating and rebalancing brain chemistry, THE THYROID DIET provides the in depth information needed by anyone whose weight struggles stem from thyroid disease.
Thyroid Balance: Traditional and Alternative Methods for Treating Thyroid Disorders: An authoritative guide to treating thyroid issues—using both traditional and alternative methods. A comprehensive guide from an M.D. and a noted medical writer that explains all of the traditional and alternative methods available for treating hyper- and hypothyroidism. The Thyroid Solution : A Mind-Body Program for Beating Depression and Regaining Your Emotional and Physical Health: This book explains the link between stress and thyroid imbalance; how thyroid imbalance affects your emotions and relationships; and how to cope with the effects of this imbalance. Because thyroid problems primarily strike women, a whole section deals with women's health issues, such as infertility, miscarriage, postpartum depression, premenstrual syndrome, and menopause. Another section provides practical tools, such as evaluating lab tests and self-diagnosis techniques, dealing with treatment problems and side effects, and preventing memory lapses and depression. The book covers lifestyle choices that affect thyroid health, such as diet, supplementation, and exercise. Thyroid Power: Ten Steps to Total Health: Covers thyroid function basics, diagnostic and treatment issues, helpful and harmful supplements and environmental factors, repairing the immune system (the origin of thyroid troubles), and a rich, sensitive exploration of holistic healing.
Coconut Oil Miracle: The highly rated book that explodes the myth that saturated fats are bad and that polyunsaturated fats are good. Provides concrete proof that polyunsaturated fats are the largest culprit behind obesity, hypothyroidism and heart disease. Details the many health benefits of coconut oil, including its metabolism boosting properties. A must read for those who have given up on losing weight. The Coconut Diet: Not only does coconut oil boost metabolism and speed weight loss, there is evidence that suggests that adding a small amount of coconut oil into one's daily diet can help lower cholesterol; improve conditions such as diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, IBS, Crohns, and other digestive disorders; enhance thyroid production; and increase overall energy. The Coconut Diet offers a 21-day weight loss program with meal plans and more than 70 recipes. Coconut Lover's Cookbook: Well written cookbook which covers both sweet and savoury recipes using coconut. From main course meals, to blender drinks, breads, and desserts, the many recipes will inspire those who wish to incorporate more coconut into their diet..
Eat Fat Look Thin: A Safe and Natural Way to Lose Weight Permanently: This book is a must read for those who have tried everything to lose weight, to no avail. It dispels the myth that fat-free foods are good for you. Read the testimonies on Amazon to see how following Bruce Fife's recommendations have helped many discouraged people lose weight safely and regain their health.. Eat Fat Lose Fat: This book corrects the false North American belief that tropical fats and oils (such as coconut and palm) are unhealthy, asserting that those fats (and coconut, especially) are beneficial saturated fats that should be more heavily incorporated into our diets. Enig and Fallon promote a more traditional diet (ie. animal fats over vegetable oils; raw or fermented dairy products instead of pasteurized ones), noting that our ancestors were much healthier with little heart disease and obesity. The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of Americas Favorite Health Food: A groundbreaking expose that tells the truth about soy that scientists know but that the soy industry has tried to suppress. Soy is not a health food, does not prevent disease and has not even been proven safe. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive problems, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, even heart disease and cancer. Of particular note is the proven thyroid supressing properties of soy. That is why it is fed so much to livestock as it slows their metabolism and promotes faster weight gain.
