Directions
for Preparing Clay
First,
it should be noted that calcium bentonite clay is a swelling
clay and as such should always be allowed to fully hydrate/swell
before use. 30-60 minutes is usually sufficient.
Second,
metal containers and utensils should not be used or come
in contact with the clay especially once it is hydrated
as the clay will react with the metal. Ideally, hydrated
clay should be stored in glass containers and be mixed using
wooden or plastic utensils. It is not recommended to store
hydrated clay in plastic containers as the clay can start
to absorb chemicals from the plastic.
Third,
only the best quality pure water should be used. Spring
water or filtered water is best. Distilled water is not
recommended.
The
amount of water to mix with the clay powder depends on the
intended use.
Mixing
for internal consumption:
Calcium
bentonite clay can be taken internally in a hydrated form
that is a pudding consistency (also known as clay magma).
To
make the pudding consistency, simply mix 1 part clay powder
with 3 parts water. For making small batches (up to 2 cups
of water), this can be done by adding the water and clay
powder to a glass or plastic container and covering with
a tight fitting non-metal lid. Shake vigorously for 1 minute.
Then let sit with the lid off or slightly ajar for 30 minutes
before using.
For
making a large batch, in order to avoid using a mixer with
metal blades, the following method may be used.
Using
a one gallon plastic bucket with an airtight lid, pour 3
cups of water into the container. Then sprinkle 1 cup of
clay powder evening over the water. Repeat these two steps
about 4 times. On the final time, so that the powdered clay
will not be the top layer, only pour 1 1/2 cups of water.
Then add the final cup of clay, followed by the remaining
1 1/2 cups of water. Put the lid on and let sit for 1-3
days. Then open the bucket and using a non-metal spatula
gently stir the mixture to move the clay on the bottom of
the container to the top a few times. Then let the clay
sit for 1 more day. The clay can then be used. It is best
to transfer the hydrated clay to glass containers with non-metal
lids for storage.
Some
people prefer to take the clay in a liquid form. This can
be done by mixing 8 parts water with 1 part clay powder
and allowing it to sit for 30-60 minutes before consuming.
Mixing
for external usage:
A
thicker consistency is usually required for external applications,
for example face masks, where the clay needs to cling and
not drip off.
This
can be achieved by following the previous instructions for
making the clay pudding, but reducing the water slightly
to make a thicker mixture. Anywhere between 2 1/4 parts
water to 1 part clay powder to 2 3/4 parts water to 1 part
clay powder, depending on one's preference.
Dosage
for Taking Clay Internally
The
standard dosage for internal consumption is 1-2 tablespoons
of the clay pudding/magma per day, best taken on an empty
stomach. First thing in the morning is best. This should
be followed by drinking 8 ounces of water.
For
the liquid form, the dose is 2 ounces of clay liquid per
day.
Do
not take supplements or medication for 2-3 hours after taking
the clay.
Directions for Using Clay Externally
Poultice
or Pack:
The
hydrated clay magma needs to be somewhat thick for this.
Apply the clay magma onto a clean dressing to the thickness
of at least 1/4 inch. Then apply to the body for at least
20 minutes, or longer if desired. Remove pack if abnormal
discomfort is experienced. Gently clean the skin after removing
the pack.
Clay
Detox Baths:
Thoroughly
mix 1-2 cups of clay powder to a hot bath. Soak in the bath
for between 15-60 minutes (30 minutes being the standard
time).
For
people who are undergoing a detox program, clays bath should
be taken 2-3 times per week.
For
general wellness, clay baths can be taken once per week
or every other week.
